A one-year-old boy has died after being kicked by a horse in Melbourne's outer south-east.

Police are investigating the death at Narre Warren East about 6pm (AEDT) on Sunday.

They say the child and his mother were visiting a relative at a property in Boundary Road, when he was kicked by a horse and suffering significant internal injuries.

Paramedics were unable to revive the 13-month-old who died at the scene.

Police are preparing a report for the coroner.

That is just horrible! D:

How did he end up in hoof-range at 13 months old?

According to the reader comments in the link by soemone who was there (I think they may have been an emergency services worker) the little boy got free fo his stroller, climbed under the fence and went behind one of the ponies/horses. I know how fast toddlers can move, I don't blame the mum or the horse, it was just one of those horrible accidents.

It's a terrible tragedy.

But I can't help thinking of all the unattended small children I've seen who have been allowed to wander at liberty around stables and loose horses. Sometimes more careful supervision is necessary and people don't really take these things seriously unless something tragic happens.

Unfort this was just a freak thing; the kid mum is a horsewoman. But I agree with you, the way some people let little kids wander around stables/barns/paddocks is shocking. Yeah they need to learn, but not by being kicked and killed!
