A 12-year-old boy died today in a house fire in Melbourne's southeast.
Fire crews were called to Averne St, Cranbourne, just before 3am after neighbours heard noises coming from the house.
It's believed the family of seven were woken by barking dogs and discovered a portion of the weatherboard extension at the rear of the house ablaze.
The father tried to get his wife and five children out, but his 12-year-old son was trapped inside.
The mother was taken to Casey Hospital suffering shock, while the father and four boys, aged 15, eight, five and three, were treated by paramedics at the scene.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
