Best Day

I had the best day yesterday. My first RDO. Doesn't get too much better than this, tbh. Nothing fancy. Nothing material gained. Just a lot of plain good ol' happy, old school style.

It started like this

I am at work, and have discovered they allow Dreamwidth :) YAY! Weekend shifts are (generally!) quiet shifts, so this is a bit of a bonus! I think I've mentioned prior that I actually work at two different sites, a week day one in a suburb called Burwood which is very leafy and old, fairly close to the city. And on weekends I work in Heatherton. Less leafy, more industrial but still ok. I actually prefer this office purely because I'm not sitting in what feels like a concrete bunker with no natural light. This office is open plan (usually something I loathe with a passion but ok in here), loads of natural light. Only here on weekends so it's much, much quieter. On the other side of the glass wall to where we sit is my old team. I don't get to see them anymore other than the weekend workers (1 per day), and soon they will all be gone as the contract is over. I picked a very good time to leave. I'm very sad for them, they were the best team I have ever worked with in my life.
Anyway, I go on walks at lunch time. VERY important to move on 12 hour shifts. I haven't been birding in a while, and never anticipated I would strike a LIFER on a work walk! I was walking down a main road towards the Gardiner Creek track when I heard Galahs in the trees. I glanced up, and out on the electricity wires was what I thought was a very odd looking Galah. Galahs are a rather sweet pinky and dusky grey. This one was very, very dark. Almost black. I paused and whipped out the phone to grab a snap (my phone camera is my naturalists sketch book, seriously!). I jay-walked across to get better look and managed a VERY quick look before she flew off with the Galahs. I managed a couple crappy shots and a quick vid.
Analysed them as I kept walk (I'm going to kill myself doing that one day, I swear!). Looked sort of like a Galah but...not quite right. The crest especially was totally wrong. Galahs have a very over-gelled looking crest, this one was more...floofy and curly. I dared to hope. I msg'ed one of my friends and asked what did she think it was. Alison knows EVERYTHING about birds. She's a wild bird rehab expert :)
FEMALE GANG GANG COCKATOO!!!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
L I F E R !
It's very disconcerting she's in the suburbs, although there have been reports of it happening when there is not much food where they usually live. That's usually in heavily wooded forest areas. They are actually not at all easy to find. So this, my friends, was INCREDIBLY lucky!!!! I am one very, very happy little nature nerd who is going to cherish and share these crappy from-a-distance mobile phone shots with you all :D
It's certainly been quite the few days for birds. Yesterday just walking in the little private park we have at work here I got a close up meeting with a Currawong (very much a fav bird) and a Grey Butcherbird! Not uncommon but I haven't seen one in months and months. It's been seriously good :)
RDO's start tomorrow and I am HANGING OUT!
I need to recover after the severe emotional trauma that is the latest Hobb novel. I finished the last few pages this morning before work (woke up 15mins early specifically to do that). Bawled all the way to work in the car. I am broken. DAMN YOU, HOBB! DAMN YOU!

The most craptastic LIFER shot I have ever taken, and I am SO HAPPY I did :)

birds and very special koi )

8 hours to go *sigh*
Luckily I have a book on apiary to read. No, not getting a hive, just interested in them. Because the natural world, every single damn facet of it, is INCREDIBLE. Only one chapter in and I have learned so much new stuff. Bees rock. They also sting, but they're cool :)

Maybe I'll get a hive.

On a side note, I got Craig and I a copy of Planet Word today. Can not WAIT to start it, it's my waiting reward for when I finish my last exam and hand in my last paper :)

has got to be THE stupidest thing I have ever seen in my life. I dispair for the human race. We get dumber and dumber every single freaking year.

On a GOOD note: I got my HTC Desire back!!!!! It survived the dunking in the machine! The service guy had to take the battery apart and do some serious cleaning out of the just starting to rust bits but everything seems fine. I now have a water mark on the screen but you can barely see it unless the screen goes white for an app, and even then you need to have it on the right angle. It seems to be alright. Thank freaking GOD! I haven't minded having the Wildfire, but the Desire is just SO much better :)

Have been having a LOT of trouble trying to find something good to read. The market seems flooded with a lot of crap at the moment. I INHALED Picoult's last offering. ABSORBED the last Immortal Instruments novel. And TRYING to drag out The Inheritance by Hobb as much as I can. Did a book-club search last night and found a fantasy author which people seem to approve of, called L.E Modesitt Jr. He's written a booger load of books, which is generally a pretty good indication of a good writer. I got the first Sage of Recluse novel, let's see how it goes. I have Water for Elephants on HOLD at the library, but of course everyone wants to read it at the moment so who knows how long I'll be waiting :P

Day 3 today. School after work. Darren has been sick so I have been working one-up all week, and I am exhausted beyond telling. Plan for the weekend is a long, lazy lay in with what is hopefully a good book!!! Although I need to do the final edit on my Air Wing assignment, and also my mediation assignment, so will set aside a few hours for that. Joy.

and go borrow or buy this book:

This is The Hunger Games by Suzeanne Collins. Holy goodness. I saw a review of it in one of our big national newspapers and the story line intrigued me. I used my evil library computer catelogue powers for good and tracked it down. I have been reading this book like I had been starving and this was a feast. There are few books I get into a deep at this one, esp with the blood-y story line. But...
OH
MY
GOODNESS.
Just honestly, go get it. Read it. Then go read the 2nd and 3rd books :D
Just...
Wow.

I read this book many years ago and loved it so, so much. I would love to read it again if anyone ever finds it at a 2nd hand shop or anything. I'm sure I could find it on eBay or whatever or just buy it new, I have a listing-hunting going on eBay, and I don't actually WANT it new; I like the way old books smell and feel :) Keep your eyes peeled, please? Obv I will pay anyone back who finds it :)

Now, I have been thinking the past few days that I would really love a photoshoot with my ponies again. I treasure Sarah's shots, and I want more. I just wish I could have gotten some shots with Danny by her. Well, I figure use my available resources and set up a shoot for myself :) I'm surrounded by outstanding, talented photographers, surely I can work something out, no? So I asked Alex if he'd please shoot for me, Mic has also agreed to come shoot and assist. Both guys seems quite keen after I told them what I want. No, not nude :P Always thought those Lady Godiva shots look extremely painful :P Have a look below see what I'm sort of planning, with my own bent, of course. I found the most goregous top on eBay which I HAD to have so brought it outright, found the skirt I wanted at Big W of all places and am hitting the op shop tomorrow to see what other treasures I can find. Also found some great boots to suit, and which can double as going out to dinner boots. May even do some barefoot stuff if it's not too freezing cold. Plan is ride my girly whirly pony up into Lysterfield where I will meet the boys. Want shots in the Stand, on the fire-track and along the Orchard. I wish I could take Dan up there too but that's not gonna happen - Dan HATES being ponied and Desi HATES being the pony, and vice versa. :P Unless Tanya or Shar or Melissa feel like coming, which may be hard since there is a chance it'll happen on a weekday rather than weekend. I'll get changed once I meet the boys on site. I am NOT riding in gypsy gear along a public road :D Although, that might channel Dom across the ocean to here, so might be worth it...:D

no white, obviously. Won't suit Desi or me. I'm going for earthy tones, blues and I need to find some silver bangles and I found this FUNKY AS HELL necklace that will be SO perfect. I should have grabbed it. Can't get it out of my mind. Gonna go get it tomorrow :)

Charles de Lint's Newford books and stories are the best thing. Ever. I just thought you should all know.

So mum and I headed to the city this morning to meet with one the best authors alive today. We had plenty of time so we walked around a bit, I have a couple shots from the city which I'll pop up later on tonights shift. This will be JUST for the blurry photos of me meeting Jodi that mum took. :P I got to the shop a good hour early and was 10th in line or so.  I wasn't going ANYWHERE as loads of people showed up shortly aftewards. Sat with a young lady who had taken the day off from school to be there. :-D Smart young thing, has read allt he books. She was doing some chem homework which I was surprisingly understood, then we chatted about Jodi's books. There was a reviewer from The Age there who was interviewing people and who kept grinning over at us as we were having quite an in-depth discussion happening about The Pact. Then Jodi arrived and we got down to business. It was great! She was more than happy to pose for a few happy snaps with everyone and my gosh she was just so friendly, you know?  We'd given our names beforehand to be marked in our boks on a bit of paper so Jodi would know what to write. Then a lady took our books and we were welcome to come forward. I got blocked by a staffer and had to step around him (almost bit him!), while I was doing this Jodi opened the book and grinned, looking around and said 'Oh gosh, who's Maggie?'.
'That would be me!'
"Well, have you read the book yet?'
'I sure have. Loved it.'
'Well then, you'll know you are a pivital character then!'
We had a laugh about that and then I had happy snaps, then moved on to make room for the next person. I was all SQUEEEE and did a little skip-hop which caused giggles behind me :-D
Got back to Dandenong still all glow-y and happy. Went and visited my poor neglected haven't-been-ridden-in-a-week horses, then came home. To find an email in my inbox inviting me to come to the DINNER WITH JODI tonight!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGGHHHH!!!! This after I have already cancelled my leave for tonight and am stone broke until pay goes through tomorrow. SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT! PLUS I couldn't take tonight off anyway since that would leave Adam with just two hours to get someone in. And for a night shift that is no easy feat. CRAP CRAP CRAAAAP. How horrifically frustrating. :-( BUT, I did get to meet with Jodi and exchange a laugh, which I think was really quite awesome. And it was ok short but more intimate than a dinner with 400 other people. I'm happy I got what I got. Having the dinner would have been outstanding, but I'll survive.
Now, onto the pics. Sorry most are blurry, mum was holding down the no-flash button and isn't what one would call the world's most experianced photographer. But she did her best and I love them, blurr and all. :-D
