We are in full winter mode here. VERY cold. Nowhere near enough rain tho. In fact, it's quiet concerning. We need a couple very decent downfalls to be safe for the summer. Cold enough tho. I've picked up my 2nd usual winter cold. This one seems to be primarily coughing. Such joy. I am so sick of catching everything that goes around. It comes from being around people. If i didn't have to be around filthy humanity, I'd be fine :P
Foot is still very unhappy in that one spot so walking around hurts like hell. Driving me nuts!!!!
3 months til America and Canada :)
Went into the Dandenongs yesterday with Craig. The market was on in Emerald so we had Polish pancakes and Golzames :D Then we went to the National Rhodedendoron Gardens. I couldn't walk much at all but had a little fun with macro.
Plan for today is read, read some more, read, oh and then read :) I might even throw in a bit of reading.

Floyd. Every night. We have war games on the bed. I have developed reflexes like you wouldn't believe.

Melissa's new pony arrived yesterday. I wasn't able to be there due to ...stuff, but went down right after "stuff" finished. He's lovely :) Little bay fellow with a cute little star. He was very nervous and unsure of himself, as you would expect with a horse just brought in to a new home. Just lots of walking around. But the thing I instantly liked about him? he was at the gate and instantly leaned into the scratchies Craig and I gave him. He walked off after a bit, but stayed close. Calmed down after a little while and was grazing, and would walk up to us to get love every few minutes. It was very, very sweet. He has a kind eye and sweet disposition. I am looking forward to seeing if he's as kind under saddle as he is on the ground. Nice buy, Melissa. Very nice buy indeed.

Cute, hey?

On a side note, does anyone know why they call them Icelandic horses rather than ponies? They look like ponies to me...

Goodbye, little guy. I'm sorry I never got to meet you. I loved following your adventures on J's FB. I've never seen a foal more loved than you. Run free, little mate.

Rico with the little halter I sent him not long after he was foaled.

I vol'ed last time it was held here and FAR OUT it was fun :D Got to meet and greet so many different horse people, see SO many wonderful things. People PAY to get in there, I get to go in free and go back stage and yeah, just.... WOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!! It is hard work. Last time I was a Team Leader too which made it even harder (you try controllintg a bunch of horse-struck 16yr olds *rolls eyes*) but DAMN it was fun.

CAVALLOS!

CAVALLOS ARE FINALLY ORDERED AND SHOULD BE HERE SOME TIME NEXT WEEK! WATCH THIS SPACE FOR WHAT WILL PROB BE FUNNY VIDEO/photos OF DAN WITH SNEAKERS/RUNNERS ON :D

Some $300 later *-_-

I got the gel inserts as well for extra protection for his soles. Also spoke to the rep here in Australia; if the size doesn't suit then I can return them if I pay postage and the boots are undaaged etc. I really h ope these work for him. He LOVES being out and about. He's nowhere near ready nor wanting retirement. This way we can do group rides again too, with a safe sane horse for Shar to learn on and enjoy, and a sweet cheeky son of a bitch for the more experianced riders (Danny always knows how far he can push any particular rider! Slugs for Shar, good boy for Tanya and Melissa, little shit for me because he knows I love it LOL!)

Izi ended up is hospital last night. She has had a very bad cold and yet Diana insisted on taking her to child care. Says it builds up her immunity. Um no, letting her body have a rest from constant exposure to pathogens so she can face the next lot with a strong and viable immune system will help build up her immunity. I don't have kids and even I know that! GAH! Anyway, poor baby started having issues breathing. So she took her to the dr who advised her to take her straight to hospital. There they put her on a ventilator to help her breathe. She is so stuffed full of pathogens they can't even tell what's wrong with her 100%. Either she has whooping cough which is going around at the moment, or she has the start of asthma which is possible as I believe Diana suffered it in her youth (no one in my family has, we get bred quite strong, us nature nerd families). I don't know WHY but it seems like almost every Australian kid gets asthma. Is it the pollen from the trees? Is it genetic? Something else in the atmosphere? When I was at school I think I was the only white kid all through high school who never once had even a vague need for an inhaler. *shrug* I haz TIGHT genetics :P or more likely, very good luck. Anyway, Izi is home and is not permitted back to childcare for at least a week, esp if it's whooping cough which, from what I understand, is extremely catching and can be very, very serious. Also they said it could be croup, I have no idea about that but I assume it's also infectious? Either way she needs time to recover. D's mum has her on Monday but my parents are going over there to take care of her as D's mum also has a cold and is run-down. Tuesday the same, I think, and Wednesday it looks like possibly I 'll be baby sitting her. Still waiting to hear back re that. Prob will go over to their house to do that. Much easier; everything I need will be there. I can just take a book to amuse myself while she sleeps etc.
In other news, my geriatric gelding is a PITA :D A very, very naughty cheeky little PITA, aparently. He's always had his games, esp when it comes to being caught,. We have each other worked out. He knows how far he can push me. But he clearly has decided Melissa is next in line for some testing, the little shit. He was an ass to catch last time she went to get him until I went down there and gave him the fish eye, then he stood there all sweetness and light, butter wouldn't melt in his mouth. Apparently on Saturday when I was at work and M was getting the horses ready for John the Magic Farrier, he was a BASTARD! REFUSED point blank to be caught. So he ended up not gettng trimmed or measured up for his Cavallo's. I can just imagine what his behaviour wasl ike. I thought when they get old they are meant to SETTLE DOWN and behave :D I know it would have been annoying as hell for M but I couldn't help but get the giggles when I got the sms. SUCH a bad, bad boy. Good to know he's feeling good enough to be a little shit ;) Next time, I'll corral him in with Mocha and Soli to make him a bit easier to catch, and I'll leave his halter on.
Kind of makes me feel all special that he comes walking up to me, nickering his deep old man nicker, these days. Actually both horses have been very affectionate lately. Desi has been doing her usual 'omg I'm so happy to see you!' nicker which I ADORE too. Awwwwww, my ponies LOVE me!!! :D

I read this book many years ago and loved it so, so much. I would love to read it again if anyone ever finds it at a 2nd hand shop or anything. I'm sure I could find it on eBay or whatever or just buy it new, I have a listing-hunting going on eBay, and I don't actually WANT it new; I like the way old books smell and feel :) Keep your eyes peeled, please? Obv I will pay anyone back who finds it :)

Now, I have been thinking the past few days that I would really love a photoshoot with my ponies again. I treasure Sarah's shots, and I want more. I just wish I could have gotten some shots with Danny by her. Well, I figure use my available resources and set up a shoot for myself :) I'm surrounded by outstanding, talented photographers, surely I can work something out, no? So I asked Alex if he'd please shoot for me, Mic has also agreed to come shoot and assist. Both guys seems quite keen after I told them what I want. No, not nude :P Always thought those Lady Godiva shots look extremely painful :P Have a look below see what I'm sort of planning, with my own bent, of course. I found the most goregous top on eBay which I HAD to have so brought it outright, found the skirt I wanted at Big W of all places and am hitting the op shop tomorrow to see what other treasures I can find. Also found some great boots to suit, and which can double as going out to dinner boots. May even do some barefoot stuff if it's not too freezing cold. Plan is ride my girly whirly pony up into Lysterfield where I will meet the boys. Want shots in the Stand, on the fire-track and along the Orchard. I wish I could take Dan up there too but that's not gonna happen - Dan HATES being ponied and Desi HATES being the pony, and vice versa. :P Unless Tanya or Shar or Melissa feel like coming, which may be hard since there is a chance it'll happen on a weekday rather than weekend. I'll get changed once I meet the boys on site. I am NOT riding in gypsy gear along a public road :D Although, that might channel Dom across the ocean to here, so might be worth it...:D

no white, obviously. Won't suit Desi or me. I'm going for earthy tones, blues and I need to find some silver bangles and I found this FUNKY AS HELL necklace that will be SO perfect. I should have grabbed it. Can't get it out of my mind. Gonna go get it tomorrow :)

Not much time to write, I gotta try and contact somene at the paddock to let them know I just said yes to a free horse and will need to book a private yard! This is Tom, or Tommy as I'm already calling him. Friend just called me from Geelong, this little guy is only 3 years old, he's a QH X Arab X Percheron. His owner has run into financial difficulty and they are getting rid of their 3 horses. Their other 2 (including Tommy's dam, Arab x Percy) have been rehomed but no one has wanted Tom and he was to go to the market mid next week. Not reg'ed, unbroken, and not in the best condition I've ever seen a horse. No points for guessing where he'd end up!!! Rachel was really upset as she really likes this boy, says he's super friendly, just a clumsy dumb-ass colt. YES COLT! NOT GELDED! FARK!!!!! Getting my vet to come out and geld him next week the day after he arrives. Rachel can't afford another horse (she has 5), so I've stepped up. HOLY SHIT I HAVE ANOTHER HORSE!!!!! I reckon break him in and yeah, I'll have 3 HORSES to maintain! SHIT SHIT SHIT! But look at his FACE! How can you say no to this FACE?!?!?!?

Sorry, only photo I have at this stage. MORE SOON!!!

UPDATE: APRIL FOOLS, YA BUNCHA OF DAGS!!!!!
maggies_lens: (Default)
in bad_riding a vid was put up of Linda Parelli (or however the hell you spell it) basically beating the living crap out of some poor horses' face with a lead rope to make it back up. Um. Natural horsemanship EPIC FAIL! I taught Desi to back in 5 mins using my hand on her chest and a loose rope flicking at her feet to get her to move them and make the connection. And that's when I was GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEN as grass with young horses and never trained one in my life. Gawd, even *I* knew back then that would work. She's meant to be a TRAINER, a world famous advocate for a kinder, gentler way. Pfft. You know, I read all the Natural Horsemanship books when I got Desi, they made sense in a lot of ways and I learnt a lot, but I didn't play 'games', I never read ANYthing about BEATING a horse, and I ended up using the advise from an old Australian horse trainer book (who's name escapes me at the moment! Aussies, help? Old guy, had a series of books, Tom something or other.....). Anyway, my responce to the entry, had some 3-minute fun with Google and then Photoshop *snigger*

t-minus 24 hours until I know about Lead Dispatcher. *quakes*

Ok, today I tried my hand at textures. I don't think I did too badly. It's actually easy! If anyone wants to know what I did, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to do a step by step. :-) I would appreciate any comments, esp suggestions for future improvements, please! Please go gentle on me, i was a bit nervous posting it up, to be honest :P
Also, if anyone knows how to install font packages into Photoshop I would love to know how to do it!
And the funniest thing? To get Destiny to pull this pose I was scratching her bottom! LOL!!!!!! Ah, the dignity and noble beauty of the Arabian horse....*giggles*

EDIT: right, just called my local horsey vet to ask him what he thought. Described everything to him, including the dark colour as well as living situation. He agrees it sounds like at some point in the past few days he got poked by something sharp and it pierced his lip and it must have been dirty. He asked re smell of which there was none, asked puss to liquid ratio and all sorts of other stuff. Said nah don't worry about it unless it comes back or starts to look infected. Basically he got dirt in the wound and as I thought, his body worked to isolate it for eventual expulsion, I just hurried it along, hence tha dark colour. If it were green or smelly he said he'd be asking me to come up right away to make sure I got it all out etc etc. Gary said he can swing by if I get worried, or I'm welcome to ride up and he'll do a quick freebie if I get concerned (it's a thing of wonder and glory to live within extremely easy riding distance to your horsey vet!), so I'll check Dan a bit later today and see if it warrants a check. Gary said he will be there all day so I can just drop in if i want, either he or Byron. Otherwise the vet nurses can do a quick check. He said not to worry, is fairly common, believe it or not, just not usually large enough for most horse owners to notice. Says probably got a fair bit of dirt in there which is why it grew to that size. No bit in Danny's mouth for at least the next 3 days tho. Fair enough. Halter it is :-)

I just went down to groom, rug and love all over my two darling hay burners. While doing the usual check to make sure 24/7 turned out ponies were all good, I noticed something NQR on Dan. On his off side, on his mouth, right where the bit sits, there was a HARD lump. About the size of the nail on your pinkie, maybe a little smaller. He showed no discomfort when I touched it and Dan is hysterical at the best of times with his head being fiddled with (in a bad way, I think somone was rough with him at some stage). To see what would happen I gave it a squeeze and he didn't react at all. So I squeezed harder and... STOP READING RIGHT NOW IF YOU GROSS OUT EASILY..... it popped. Out came black puss followed by black liquid, not much of it, sort of like a big zit. I know, I know, freakin' disgusting. He didn't seem to be in any discomfort at all so I squeezed it until nothing but a little bit of blood came out, then I washed it and popped on some sea-gell. Any idea WTF was on my horses' face?????

Tanya and Shar were going to come down this morning for some Danny goodness, when I got a phone call from Tanya. She was calling to say sorry we can't come because we are going to go have a look at a possible horse for Shar! Did we want to come for a day-trip? DID I!!!! Dragged Al out too and off we went.  Met at the girls' place which is in Cockatoo, beautiful sort of suburb in the hills. Met their cats and the foster kitten (they foster kittens in need of homes or respite care) who is MENTAL! Then off we went to Pyalong, which was 2 hours drive away! In order to get there we had to drive right through were the Black Saturday fires raged in Feb this year. I have been avoiding going up there because I didn't want to be a looky-lou, you know? We headed into Tolangi State Forest, that was the first look I got at the devestation. I was last in Tolangi some years ago on a school excursion, back before the drought. I remember vibrant green, as far as rain-foresty you can get this far South. I remember the deafening bird sing, the under currents of insects, and the rustling of un-seen small creatures. When we stopped at a view-point to stretch our legs, I got some photos. I stood next to the burnt trees and looked up at the burn marks, so far over my head.... and shuddered. We travelled on into Kinglake itself. The burnt out houses, collapsed barns with their beams all warped and twisted from the heat, excavators everywhere, Aussie flags flying proud, all to often at 1/2 mast. But you could feel the spirit coming through. It was the weekend and LOADS of people were up there. The Melbourne community has come together and everyone heads up to the areas on weekends to put coins in charity bins, buy food from the local shops, and take photos which will one day form part of this nation's history. But not of properties, not without permission. You never know which house someone was hurt in, our passed away in. Photos below the cut of what we saw. Vid clip loading at we speak of the drive up through Tolangi. Despite the vast, vast tracts of burnt out land, the green is coming back. In fact, nature is coming back faster than the man-made stuff! In a years time the scars will remain, but they will be almost hidden by the new growth.

Shar's new horsey is a Clydie x Arabian gelding. Well, he's not technically HERS as yet, the sale is pedning a vet-check pass, of course. I forgot how old he is, 11yrs old I think? he was an oppsy-daisy foal; the mare was supposed to be infertaile, her owners had been trying to breed her for a while to another Clydie (I think it was?) but with no joy and she was declared infertile. The people who took her on had an Arabian stallion who needed some company so in she went with him. Some year and a bit later.... :-D You would think a horse with this breeding would look a bit odd, but in fact he's quite perfect really. Imagine a Clydie but finer, and you have this little guy. Little at some 16hh! BIG white blaze, socks, and one of his eyes has white eye lashes :-D VERY lovely boy. Very calm, willing and a bit or a slow-motion rocking-horse type :-) I did the eagle-eyed-horsey-friend thing and watched his every move. He dishes ever so slightly but nothing atrocious. His hooves are in need of some attention and he could do with some muscle and fat but all that will come with time. Tanya rode him and he was a real gentleman. I hopped on and did some VERY basic flexation with him at a walk, trying to feel how his back moved under me, how his legs felt and how willing he was to give his mouth to me. Considering he'd only been ridden 3 times since November, he was incredible. If anything, a bit on the slow side, but he's going to be a school-master/pet, so a steady, gentle personality is a must. He didn't feel ponderous like I thougt he might, quite cat-like on his feet. A little resistant when I asked for his head but once he understood what I wanted he was happy enough to drop onto the bit. He felt like I was driving a big ol' comfy V8 cadillac :-) PLENTY of power in reserve but happy to be in cruise control :-D Shar hopped on and was led around to see how she liked him and I dare say she did! He's hunted and his mane was roached so it's growing back all funky now, but his forelock is sooooo long! Lovely deep mahogany colouring. No sigh of scratch on his fetlocks even tho they are pink-skinned. In all, a friendly little guy. If he passes vet check, he's off to a VERY loving home. AND I get to ride him up in their area when he comes home :-D I need a cherry-picker to get up there, but I'm already very fond of him. Photos under the cut, of course.

So I'm sitting here peeved off that I am working over Easter, decided to troll through the local newspaper and saw a hilarious article about a photographer named Julian Wolkenstein and his friend Acacio de Silva. This is what happens when you get a horse loving photographer and a hair artist, both with FAR too much time on their hands, together. :-D
PMSL!!!!!!

And my personal favourite:

Busy day at work, but was going well, until I got a sms from Craig of a huge plume of smoke... I looked closer and felt my heart hit the top of my throat rather hard. It was Lysterfield Lake Park. Where I ride. Which is where my horses are... yeeeeah...(*-*) Kept an eye on it for about 10mins via web site, sms updates and a call to my agistment lady and a friend at Narre Naorth brig. When Gregg rocked up at work and said 'um you may want to go check your horses, I just drove past there and it's very close' I felt my blood thin out and race through my viens :P Quickly called two of the guys who I know where out on the road and live in the front's way and told them get cracking. They thanked me and said they would go right away. I then turned to Adam and without even me needing to ask he said 'go, you need to go now.' Thank god for good bosses. Drove down as fast as I could through peak traffic. The closer I got, the bigger and uglier the smoke cloud got. Finally managed to struggle my way onto the road they live on. Smoke was thick, black and naaasty. Headed for the paddock, before the wind swung around and took it east-wards. Gregg showed up shortly thereafter, then Melissa. I couldn't get over the speed of the front!!!!! Now and then a huge thick extra plume of black joined it and Gregg and I winched; that means it's hit a structure of some sort. For it to produce what it was producing means it hit either sheds, barns, houses or something large like that. I saw what appeared to be Elvis fighting along with another chopper.
I'm watching the news as I type. One house confirmed lost.
Thankfully looks like people are being smart and moving early. Esp if they have kids.
It's in the Birdsland Reserve which borders our riding area.
We watched it race down the valley and up the hill, the flames clearly visible from our paddocks even tho it was a good 5k's away. That means they were freaking HUGE.
*shakes head* We need rain. We need rain urgenty. My poor State :-( Once this place was vibrant green with beautiful temperate growth, our dam's full to the brim, flowers lasted all through summer. Not now.

EDITED TO ADD A COUPLE CRAPPY MOBILE PHONE PICS

Because I didn't take the time to go home and get my real camera )

Found out myu crew were up there during all this. They were one of the first. All are safe and well. One firie got into an accident on the way to his station but is ok, two more had minor burns to face and hands but they too are alright and were released from hospital that afternoon. This fire is now all but out.
