I had the best day yesterday. My first RDO. Doesn't get too much better than this, tbh. Nothing fancy. Nothing material gained. Just a lot of plain good ol' happy, old school style.

It started like this

I was very sorry to say good bye to the city, I have to say. I enjoyed myself so greatly there. :) It's a beautiful place and the people are marvelous. There was this Yank on the train who was telling is that CM is a TERRIBLE place, full of shysters etc. That we'd HATE it. Um, no :)
We spent our last night at the Vegetarian place down the rd called Food fro Heaven, they are sister to the Elephant Nature Park. The food was AWESOME. In the morning we packed, then took the scooters back to their shop. Which sucked. Got back to the Soi, and checked out. There is this crazy little dog that lives across the Soi that we all made friends with. She's the dog of our laundry woman. Doggy came to say goodbye.
All 3 of us then went for a 2 hour traditional Thai massage. Holy SHIT the PAIN! But GOOD pain :D I felt loose as a goose afterwards. And anything I needed to distract myself from the pain I could hark back to seeing Craig in the bright pink loose pants they had given him to change into; you change into very loose light clothing for the massage.
Then off to the airport and back to BKK.
We're in a different hotel than the last one, but only one Soi over. I have my whole own room on a floor above C&M, which is actually very lonely after we have been living in each others pockets :P We had dinner and then went to Soi Cowboy, a famous Adults Only Soi here in BKK. Everything goes! And it did! We had drinks at a bar on the cnr and gave each other conniptions by being extremely risk-ay :D Our faces were HURTING from all the laughing :D I didn't bring my cam so I will go again tonight and try and get some shots :)

way, way, way too much fun :D Craig and I on our little scooter.

We spent the night in a funky little hut, just Marion and I as Craig was back in Chiang Mai; he had awoken the morning we left with a terrible migraine so hadn't come. We both missed him. The hut was just a small thing, no air con, two beds with mosquito netting and a sep room with a toilet and COLD WATER ONLY shower. Which was just fine - you don't actually need the hot water there :D It was right on the banks of the river, so I fell asleep to the sounds of insects, bats and the river tripping along on the shallows. No traffic sounds at all. Sheer freakin' heaven. God I loved it there...
Anyway, next morning we had a glorious breakfast. They feed you like royalty there. At breakfast, lunch and dinner we gathered at the complex and could serve ourselves from a huge selection of yummies. Apart from one dish with chook and one with fish, everything was veggie and BEAUTIFUL! I have discovered Dragon Fruit and I LOVE it. Ate sooooooo much!
We got to have a walk around with our guide Por, out in the actual grounds. Had to wear gumboots. It was awesome walking around amoung the elephants. Most are very happy to come up and have a cuddle with you :) I got to cuddle Mae Do. Unfort I slipped and fell onto my knees twice from getting my foot caught in the ropey grass. The first scared me because it's actually the first time I have fallen onto the bad knee since I killed it. Yeah it hurt, but not so bad. 2nd one was alright. But it did bruise up and jarred itself so I was happy to just hang out once we got back to the main complex.
Best thing was when I ran into Lek! Lek is the founder of the Park. She is a very small woman, a grand-daughter of a shaman of a local Northern Hill Tribe. Her family was given an elephant when she was 5 as payment for saving a mans life, and Lek's heart was stolen forever. She took her passion for elephant welfare forward and started Elephant Heaven. She rescued her first 4 elephants. Things grew, one day an American come on a tour, a week or so after he left they received a MASSIVE cheque. Turns out he's a multi millionaire and was so impressed with the work that he wanted to buy them land. With that money they purchased ENP. Things have just kept growing since then. They still have Heaven, they walk the ellies there to let them roam free and learn to be wild again. The dream is to one day stop the capture of wild elephants so they can release them. Logging was banned in Thailand a few years ago but not in the surrounding countries. And illegal logging continues. Plus the begging trade and tracking. Begging is BAD. It's extremely stressful for the elephants. NEVER feed a begger elephants. You are just contributing to the problem. Tracking is not bad as long as the elephants are kept in humane conditions. There are also NO laws protecting elephants. Lek is working to change all that. She employs local people from the hill tribes as guides, staff, cooks, kwan's, she buys the locally grown and produced veggies and fruit, plus meat, eggs, milk etc. She hires local labor for building etc. It all comes back to paying it forward. As a result, the local community loves and supports her work. She was ultra busy but she made the effort to track me down when she heard I wanted to meet her, so that we could have a chat and a photo. She called the baby herd over and took me in among them (not normally allowed) so that I could get a shot to remember.
She is quite frankly my hero. It's people like this who are true heroes, not stupid sports stars or actors or whatever. I didn't want to leave. I so didn't want to leave. I will be back.
They also had a little brown colt pony who they rescued from slaughter. I couldn't get any photos of the little devil as he was in grass/reeds higher than his head when we near him.

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABIIIIIIEEEEEEEES!!!!

I will be back as soon as I can. Honestly, if you are strapped for cash but want a holiday, I can not recommend this place enough. No, you won't be lounging on a beach somewhere; you will be working HARD. You won't have air con, you'll have the heat and humidity of the jungle and you will sweat so much that after two days your skin will look like you've had a VERY exxy treatment and radiate health and a killer bitchin' tan. You won't get polite, distant staff who keep their eyes down and wear impeccable uniforms, you will get hill tribe men and women in gumboots and jeans with a lighting fast smile that reaches their eyes, they will teach you Thai, joke around with you, feed you like you have NEVER been fed before in your life (not fine dining but OMG SO SO SO GOOD!!!!!! And plentiful), chat with you for hours, and make you feel welcome like no tourist resort EVER would. You'll wear gumboots, slosh around in warm mud, touch and hug and kiss and scratch the largest land animals who will rumble like big kittens if you connect with them. You'll learn to tell an elephants age through their scat! You'll find these awesome fern like plants that curl up when you gently run your finger over them. And if you are anything like me, you'll wish you could throw it all in to live there forever, no matter how hard and dirty it gets because, well, it's simply the most wonderful place ever created by human hands.

I have found heaven, and it is not in some other dimension or whatever. It is located on a large property outside the city of Chiang Mai right here in Thailand and it is called the Elephant Nature Park. I will never forget my time there. Have you ever stepped into the gates of a place and known right away that every single thing there is RIGHT? Just... right? I never have. Not until yesterday morning. As soon as I stepped off that mini bus I knew I had found a place where I belonged like no where else I have ever felt I belonged. I met the most amazing people, and even tho we sometimes had trouble speaking with each other (they were mainly hill tribes), we got along like a house on fire. There were loads of vol's from all over the world, most speaking English so I made heaps of new friends. Each and every one of the elephants found here (barr the babies that were born there last year) has a sad tale. Some are not so bad as others (elephants and keepers fallen on extremely hard times and forced into doing things they don't want to until BOTH were saved by the park), some are so horrific that I want to track down the people who did these acts and beat them into bloody pulps. Yes, I know, not very Buddhist of me but sometimes you have a right to be FURIOUS. Girls, I bonded to an elephant. I know. I KNOW! WTF, you say? I kid you not. We were able to walk amoung the little herds and made friends with them. You can go right up and love on them all you want, as long as you follow the directions of the kwan/mahouts and use your common sense. All have scars and other signs of physical abuse. One of the worst is Mae Do. Her story is distressing as hell. I won't put it here in case it upsets you, but you can read it here:
http://www.elephantnaturepark.org/herd/medo.htm
Be aware it's distressing.
Her injuries are horrific but OMG she is sooooo beautiful. She has the most beautiful face you have ever seen on an elephant (well I think she does anyway!), and her spirit just shines. She's also very, very gentle, and loved me :) I went up to give her love and she full on leaned into me. She started up this deep belly rumble and closed her eyes. Her kwan was a little shocked! I gave her more love, the more I gave her and the more I love-talked her, the more she responded. Apparently, according to our guide, she is not normally that demonstrative apart from to her kwan! So, she LIKED me! I loved her to pieces, quite frankly. I intend to start sponsoring her as soon as I am home. She is the biggest love, in every sense of the word.
I'll pop the photos up in 2 lots as there was a bit. There is also video but that will have to wait til I am home and can install a software to splice it all together as there's too much in segments. If you want to know what I got up to, let me know and I'll post. Never quite sure what y'all will be interested in :D

here we have a clear example of why cats and dogs can never get along. See the natural aggression? Clealry Kody wishes great harm to Lily, who is utterly terrorfied out of her wits and trying desperatly to escape. Woe, the life my poor abused animals lead. :D

Pierogi are almost done. Hopefully they taste good! Zippers coming to pick me up soonishly, they are my guinea pigs. :)

Wishing you all a merry, safe and fun Christmas wherevere you may happen to be in the world :-)
Rant - heheheheheheeee, sorry; horsey post next to make up for it, and I swear it's NOT Christmas related AT ALL ;-)
For those keeping score on the weather front, today was aprox 38C, with a sudden, short, short thunderstorm at about midday, now it's boiling hot again. Bring on the CHANGE!!!

Spent most of today at one of Al's parents properties. Yeah I said ONE OF. This one is goooorgeous!!!! I would kill to live on a place like that; right up against the bush/rainforest, plenty of birds, insects, frogs, lizards and a couple little lakes. Just lovely. I did find a Banjo frog (still no Green Tree Frogs!!!!) but it hid before I could get a shot. I did find a Cane Toad. These evil bastards are an introduced species here who do incredible damage. They were supposed to control Cane Beetle... that didn't work out so well. The rest of Australia dreads them spreading. Here they kill them by the thousands and still it seems to have no effect.  We had a lovely lunch after all that, then Al and I went to Bramston Beach while his folks had a nap. Been a really nice relaxing sort of day.

Babinda Boulders :-) Guess how it got it's name.... :P

That had to be THE most chilled out Strike Team EVER.
It's a looooong drive to Wilson's from here, and we stopped once at Tooradin Station to pick up one of the crews. Napped on the way up, we were in a touring bus so it was very comfy. Stayed in a VERY small towm called Yanakie just outside the Prom. The boys stayed in a donated holiday house and we girls (3 of us) got 2 cabins at the local caravan park. I quickly made friends with JJ from Clyde Brigade - we rapdily discovered we both love horses, animals of all kinds and fire-fighting :-D She volunteers time at the Pearcedale Wildlife Refuge. I didn't even know that place existed, they don't advertise. It's a re-hab for injured/sick wildlife that is in the re-release preperation stages OR housing for those that can not be returned to the wild due to ongoing disability etc. She's invited me down for a visit so guess what I'll be doing probably next week! Apparently at the moment they have a lot of sugar gliders and other gliders in. I've never seen one up close in real life so am looking forward to that very much indeed.
Anyway, we could see the fire-glow from the Prom. It was a bit scary. Next morning they got us up at 5am and fed us a breakfast fit for a KING. Toast, honey, fruit salad, banana's by the 100, egg and bacon sangers...we all packed in as much as our stomachs could handle as normally on a Strike Team it's VERY iffy re whether they will be able to get lunch to you. More often than not, they can't. Once we'd eaten so much we could eat any more we got our briefing. Turns out the majority of the fire was in totally inaccessiable areas. Not even the slip-ons (utes with tanks) could get to it. No choice but to let it burn. Luckily it's a slow moving front and staying fairly low so wildlife should be pretty safe. The rest of the fire was near tracks that can't handle the weight of the Tankers so we acted basically as quick-fills for the little slip-ons and as observers in conjunction with the air units. We had two 'planes, and 3 choppers, INCLUDING ELVIS!!!!!!!
We were sooooo bored at the Staging Area (like a RV point) that most of us went  back to sleep on the trucks, or read, or watched the cattle, or... well... I'll show you how bored I got in the next post. Then they moved us to to the air-field where the choppers landed to re-fuel etc. Elvis landed just as we got there and the crew invited us right up to check it out! That is a fairly rare and VERY prized opportunity for fire fighters!!! We often SEE them working, very very rare we get to go up and TOUCH. Elvis is an Erikkson Sky Crane Chopper, for those who don't know. He sucks up bugger loads of water from damns, pools, the ocean, whatever, and then flies over and DUMPS it. Those guys have saved more lives and properties than you could imagine. There's a bit of a fan-club going on with that 'chopper. :-D
We eneded up staying at the air-field for about 3 hours or so before we took turns being quick-fills. The road leading into the Prom is narrow and heavily forested. There are feral deer in there, and unfort one met a bit of an ikky fate when it leapt out in front of a Tanker a few days ago. The smoke was thick and it was a bit scary, and the wasps were all HIGHLY agitated so we had to be very careful of them. One DSE girl was stung/bitten and had a large allergic reaction and had to be ambulanced out. I hope she's ok. I had a great crew tho, Schmitty was the driver and pump operator, and Prowsey was the Team Leader. He's prob my fav Lt. As crew there was me and a newbie named Liam who cracked it that we didn't get to act the hero and fight the flames directly. Gawd. He should be grateful our first ST experiance was so cruisey!
After a while we moved to higher ground to let the choppers hit a slightly more agressive front, watching the wildlife move in a very lazy fashion. In fact hawks were having a great time  picking off rodents and lizards. The roo's and wallabies were a bit concerned about us but soon got over it and grazed happily. I even saw some emu's moving off in the distance.
When we were stood-down we went back to the staging area where we were again fed like absolute kings. The CWA and the Red Cross did such a great job, we all made sure to thank the ladies and the couple of guys for all they had done for us. One of the Elvis pilots (they are Canadian and American) was looking a little lost amoung us all so I sidled over and said 'how about them Canadians, eh? Funny looking 'choppers they build, eh!' doing my best impression of the accent of the New Foundlanders I have heard. He almost chocked on his chicken parma and then started laughing so hard he had tears. I guess I do it well or something ;-)
Slept most of the way home. My favourite crew in the WORLD was on shift back at the station so we all stood around chatting and exchanging war stories. I showed them my 'I'm bored' photo and they almost died. Al showed up shortly thereafter with Kody, who was beside himself with excitement as per normal. Dave Lillywhite took one look at Kody and was in love. Kody kept trying to run into the garage but I wouldn't let him. Then Dave, the cheeky bugger, told Kody 'Go get your Uncle Crossy!' just as the doors went down! Kody ran in before I could stop him and then the doors closed! Crossy didn't notice him until he was bounding around. Al, Dave and I couldn't stop laughing. Kody came leaping out when the door opened again, convinced the whole thing was a marvelous game and hyper excited he had the starring role. :-)
Got home, showed Al my photos, enjoying his reaction to my 'I'm bored' moment, had a loooong cool shower and dropped into bed like the DEAD.  I liiiiiike Strike Team. Next time I'll pack a book just in case tho...

Yeah that's me, with Elvis, beng a silly :-)

Onwards to the photos )

So, what do you guys think of my first attempts at photography on a strike team? I couldn't bring my Fugi with me as it's just too big and bulky so I just had the little Canon which fits perfectly into my front pocket. I think under the circumstances (thick smoke, little zoon ability and interesting light) it did the job rather well!!!!

maggies_lens: (Default)

This is what I have been wasting my day :-) I think it's kinda cute. The music worked out pretty nifty. It looks far, far better on the PC, but that's YouTube for you. At least I have worked out how to fool their mp3 programming.

You guys won't believe what my parents purchased today.
I warn you, you'll be sick to your guts.
Warning you....
Still reading? Ok, click the cut.... if you DARE!!!!
WARNING: not good quality photos. Taken indoors no flash crap light conditions. You'll see why no flash in a moment ;-)

On a far less disgusting note, I got measured for my new firefighters gear today. I chose the gold over the yellow. It's a bit odd, knowing I won't be in fluro yellow any more but it felt better. A bit heavier, but just... better. They had to make sure they noted I needed extra small everything. *sigh* It seems much of a muchness re the two different outfits, it should be about 50/50. Going to look odd with some of us in one type and others in another. I think it was a cop out to say choose your own. Should be one standard. It shoould come in soon. I'll get Al to do a fashion shoot of me so I can show you all how I will look as a big mean tough FF grrrrrl. :-D
maggies_lens: (Default)
He didn't make it. His poor little body had just been through too much. He went downhill fast and was laid to rest today. I couldn't save him, folks. We found him too late. At least he spent his final days warm, full bellied and well cared for.
maggies_lens: (Default)
Windy, xihateyourex, we must be connected over the great animal-lovers intermindwebz or something. We all seem to have rescues going on!
Al and I decided to walk the dogs down where we went with the dirt bike. It meant we had to drive down this dirt rd that is used primarily by trucks at a spoil depot. It's heavily overgrown on either side with rushes, grass, blackberries and other weeds. People dump a lot of rubbish there as well which sucks. Once you get past that part tho it's actually not that bad. Anyway, we walked the dogs for about an hour or so and then headed back. I keep a hoof pick in the car to help clean off the huge thick gooey mud. We'd just finished cleaning our shoes and taken off, when Al suddenly slammed on the brakes. I looked up at the rd and there was a GHOST! I swear that's what it looked like. A little white ghost trotting down the rd towards us. It came right up to us and resolved itself into a very dirty, very skinny, scared little WHIPPET!!!!
Side note: maggie has a very serious THING with dogs that look anything like greyhounds and absolutly adores whippets, has wanted one for many, many years.
We called out to the dog and it came bolting for us. I opened my door and in he jumped! He, quick check showed he was indeed a he, was shaking like crazy and obviously extremely happy to be with humans. Kody tried to sniff him but the dog was scared and barked at him so he backed off. Poor litlle thing. I swear, I have never seen such a  skinny dog in my life. He was nothing but skin draped over bone. Literally. His muzzle, ears, nose and legs were cut up pretty badly from sun burn, black berries and god knows what else. He was also crawling with fleas. But as soon as he settled onto my lap he started to lick my hands so gently. I hugged him close and that was it! He wasn't going ANYWHERE.
Well, I wish that's how it could be. But while I want him, and Al wants him even more than i do, we have to do the right thing. I called the Pearcedale Animal Shelter and asked if we could bring him in. They said to come straight down. Al drove while I cuddled 'Snowball'. Poor dog was just exhausted, you know? He cuddled into me as hard as he could. We turned the heater up and I held him close, getting gentle little licks for my trouble. The people at the shelter were falling over themselves when they saw him. Al took care of him while I did the paperwork. He perked right up with all the attention, let me tell you! But you could see he was very, very tired.
They took him out back to Quarentine where he will stay for the next 8 days. They'll scan him for a microchip. He has been de-sexed and he was very affectionate so I'm finding it very hard to believe he was dumped. I reckon he got out at some stage and has been running loose back there for a while. I'm hoping this will be the case and there is an owner worried sick about their litle dog who will shortly be getting the phone call to come fetch him. Who knows how long he's been out there? I mean he was SERIOUSLY skinny, so bad that I could feel every single bone through his lower chest when I was holding him. That is  VERY unnatural in a dog.
We've indicated if his owners do not come forward after the 8 days and there are no takers in the adoption time-frame, we'll be taking him. I have a feeling tho that our chances of getting him are quite slim; he's beautiful for all his skeletal appearance and his nature is amazing so even if no owner comes forward he'll get adopted. Whippets are not that common a breed here and they aren't a 'popular' breed so ppl who get them usually seek them out from breeders specifically. Either way, he will NOT be put down, he has a home here if needed. Al esp is very enamoured of him. I'll call them tomorrow and see if he has a chip and what's happening.
Before we left the shelter I purhased that anti-fle liquid you put behind animals' shoulder blades as seriously he was infested with them and had been in the car with our two. The lady who did the paperwork for us was impressed with what we'd done and how we were willing to take him on no matter what that she gave us the staff discount on it, how nice was THAT of her!  Treated our dogs as soon as we got home. We didn't allow them to sniff or anything so his worm burden (which no doubt he had) wouldn't have been passed on. Poor little guy. I hope he's ok. It's not easy to re-hab a starving animal, you have to be VERY careful with how much and how often you feed them. The temptation is to stuff them and give them full access, but in fact you have to give a very small amout but frequently. And it can't be rich stuff either. He's in good hands now, hopefully he'll already have had his first feed and de-flea. His poor skin was red-raw from the bites. I do have a couple of photos but they are on my mobile/cell. I believe he is pure white under all the fllth, with small brown spots on his back.
I'm so glad we found him when we did, I don't think he had long left. Whippets are not renowed for their ability to deal with cold and/or neglect. If someone has dumped him.... I will track them down and KILL them.
