It's Australia Day!

YAY WE AUSSIES ROCK! Even those of us not born here, heck, esp those of us not born here ;-) I love this country, I love it's people, it's flora, fauna and geography. I love the spirit of mateship, or larikanism, of always helping others in need. I hate how people try to call Australian's racist. If only they could really see what it means to live in a country that hates others, the Aboriginals may have been treated pretty badly in the past but it's NOTHING compared to what their fate would have been if Australia had been settled by the majority of other countries. If China had found this place first, well, then they would have known ALL about it. I love the legend of the Anzacs. I loooove damper, twisties and even vegimite in small doses. I love the fact we have an animal (platypus) that totally threw the scientific world into a tail spin when it was discovered. I love the red earth. The smell of gums in a fresh Spring morning. The sight and sound of lorikeets, cockatoos and Gouldian Finches. I love the softness of a kangaroo's big doey eyes. And the too-cute-for-words doped out look of a koala. Our horses are the best in the world, our dogs are the toughest and our sheep are cuddlier. :-) Our anthem has the wrd 'girt' in it! How cool is that!!!! We have every nation here, people from every single country in the entire world and we all live together in peace, harmony and a shared love of this land. There's the bad stuff too, but as was pointed out to me in the last post, it's the small bad apples that make the rest of this fruit basket of a country shine. I love that I can go out and within a few steps I can have a sushi roll from a Japanese place, a pizza slice from the Italian place, some roti from the Indian deli, and a can of coke from KFC. I love that I can sit down in the shopping centre with my mates and people watch the rainbow going by. I know there are many different cultures in the UK and America too, but it feels like it's not so strained here as it can be over there. It's not a melting pot; we don't expect everyone to give up their ways to fit in here, it's a fruit basket, we're all different. Different tastes, different colours, different textures, and with our differences, we compliment and enrich each other. I wasn't born here, I came here when I was 5. I have only ever had one person tell me I'm not Australian, and that was stupid kid in high school who got boo'ed down by everyone else. I'm Polish born and I will always be proud of that heritage, but I see myself as Australian. This is my land, my country, and damn me if I'm not proud to stand up and declare it. Now toss another shrimp on the b arbie and hand me a stubby! :-D
