For anyone that is interested, under the cut are some shots taken by the very talented Keith Pakenham of Tyabb CFA's gnarly day on Sunday. At 9am a lady drove right through the safetty lights, bells, whisteles and barriers at a level crossing just as a V-Line was going through. For my OS friends, V-line is a train service that rockets through the country side here. It moves VERY fast, carrying both people and trade-goods, tho rarely at the same time. Luckily no one in the train was hurt. Unfortunatly the lady in the vehicle died instantly, as you would imagine. This is the sort of scene FFs hate yet can not help but be fascinated at. It's so rare (THANK GOD!) that to the detached professional side of us, it's an incredible learning op. While this extraction was takling place, an unltra-light air craft in a near by paddock got into trouble and was forced to make an emergency landing. The pilot was totally unharmed and was walking away from his downed craft as CFA and SES arrived. Damage to the craft was minimal. GOOD FLYING! Keith was able to attend both incidents (don't ask me how, he normaly only travels with Dandenong Rescue who were not there) and take some amazing shots. I've put the best ones under the cut. THERE IS NO NASTY STUFF UNDER THE CUT. No blood, guts or othe distressing items are included, no one needs to see that. They are fascinating tho, esp the train ones.

Obey the signals, folks....

"ah, I think it used to be a car. ' Note FF in the back ground holding hose ready to go, no he hasn'tgoti t in for his Captain, but these things have a habit of going KA-BOOM!!!!

Working awkward angles

*giggle*

There's the fuel tank To give you an idea of just how hard they hit, check out the distance from the tank to the site... that's how far the car got shunted. The tank is only about 10m from the intersection. Seriously, obey the signals, they aren't there just to look pretty.

Media and looky-loos. Keith gets the best shots coz Keith is a FF and shows respect, can help at any incident, hsi stuff gets used by coroners and is allowed into sites where others are not because he knows how to stay out of the way. He takes good shots too. Media are allowed into sites once everything is under control and at the invitation of the Incident Controller. Most media people are very good, polite, non intrusive and very professional. After all, if they act like dicks they don't get access, which means they don't get the story, which means they don't get paid. In turn, they can be a huge help to investigators by running reports asking for witnessess etc.

This used to be a car. Towies see a lot of stuff as well.

Now while all this way going on, the Ultra Light came down, so they sent Tanker Two:

Well, darned!

There's the pilot talking with the police, while his mate checks out the UL.

Check out the UL's skid marks. Talk about a pucker moment!!!!!!

That's it, we're outta here. :-)

great photos!

the paddocks there still have a tinge of green - awesome!

what is FF? fire...

and that car looks horrible. what a stupid, stupid decision that woman made... what kind of hurry was she in to risk something like that. and i also wonder why she didn't see the train? it must have been within eyesight, or did she just take a LONG time to traverse the crossing? it's very tragic, but SO unnecessary.

They are, Keith is a very good photographer. I've seen him once or twice around the place at fires, how he carries that monster of a camera around is a mystery. :-D
FF: Fire Fighter :-)
Green: *sigh* I wish there was so much more. It's all gone to seed-head now, no goodness in the grass at all. Not that my two are suffering: both fat as lords! Esp Dan now that he's lame and can't be ridden.
Accident: the only thing I can think of was that she was not paying attention after partying on Australia Day, I've no idea if there was any alcohol in her system, or drugs, but it's possible. I don't understand how you could possibly miss all the lights and bells, let alone the safety barrier coming down! She actually went right into the train's path, right under the front bit. If you look at the shots you can actually see the train's front end has lifted a little as a result. At least she died instantly, that's a small mercy.
