God damn I'm pissed off. Took me ages to get onto this equine dentist. Finally got him. Made appointment for 7am today. Wake up super early. Froze ass off getting Dan in (you try finding a horse in a dark 20 acres!), and was at the hitching rail 7am sharp. Waiting, waiting...20mins later I call him. He sounds asleep. I ask how far off. He miswrote his diary and was there LAST week. Did he call me? Fuck no, don't be silly, what sort of equine professional would bother to WRITE DOWN YOUR DETAILS! Seriously? I'm going to go do a farrier and dentistry course, start making shitloads of money and treat clients like crap. Seems to be the way to do it.He has one last chance next Wednesday, if no show or whatever, he can go screw himself. Only re-booked because didn't have number of the other local dentist handy. And the other one uses mandatory sedation and power tools which sounds very, very wrong to me. Esp since the Australian Equine Dentistry Association doesn't approve of this method as there is no proven humane equipment, nor proof that the horse doesn't suffer from excessive heat in their teeth during the process. Mandatory sedation sounds like a quick-fix to me too, shows the person doesn't have any real horsemanship skills. I'll go there if I have to, but will avoid as long as possible. Now sitting at TFE about to find warm beverage and fain interest in Excel. Blergh. Bad mood Maggie is in a bad mood.

We had a really good farrier at our barn, but there were a couple of different vets over the years and I didn't think much of some of them. I'm pretty sure the one guy killed one of our lesson horses... she was a little bright red chestnut pony, very delicate build, and the kids loved her, but she had something wrong with her feet from her previous owner, and she got horse aspirin in her oats, but every once in a while she'd have to get an injection of steroids to control the swelling, and that injection was supposed to go into the muscle... and we had her in cross-ties, and it was about the tenth shot he'd given in the past hour and he wasn't paying attention... talking over his shoulder to my boss about something... and he stuck it straight into the big vein in her neck. I knew that wasn't supposed to happen and I started shouting at him, and he pretended that was where it was supposed to go... but it wasn't, because you don't inject steroids directly into the bloodstream like that, at least not the ones he was using... my boss sent me to go off and get one of the other horses, and when I came back my boss was freaking out and the vet was insisting he didn't do anything wrong and this poor pony had dropped dead. It stopped her heart.

Sorry... horror story, I know, but I guess it just means that a good large animal vet is really hard to find, and a lot of them seem not really care about the animals very much.

if it's not a vet wanting to use sedation and power tools then that's illegal. If it is (like Shannon Lee) it's perfectly legal and is actually really good. I was in a class last week where the professor of veterinary science was saying just how important it was that veterinary dentistry takes off for horse welfare. You can't properly look without sedation anyway.

However, that guy not showing up is just wholly unacceptable. Why does he think his time is more important than yours? Especially when you're agisting FFS. I'd be pissed.

mmmm, see I don't like the idea at all. Just...yeah no. I've read into it and the fact they can't even begin to prove it's humane is a huge red flashing sign to me. And yeah no again, I'm pretty sure a decent dentist will be able to find issues without knocking out every single horse. If the horse is a turd, then yes, but if the horse is fine then why do it? Destiny stands fine, she always has, I'd never consent to have her sedated just because the dentist wanted to. Sedation isn't good for health at the best of times, so no, no sedation without good reason. Esp not for an oldie like Danny who didn't react well to sedation the last time I HAD to use it on him.

Is that David Martin? He is really good and does do some horses without sedation. Otherwise you get a vet out as well to sedate. He has seen my horses a few times.

Nah, Michael Maskall, same guy who came out last time when we had that big group session thingy. If he screws me over next Wednesday I have another one lined up to try. I don't like to use sedation or power-tools, the whole thing just screams "WRONG" to me.
And re the feed bins, I am PAYING you, woman. So you may as well tell me the price or I'll come over with money and you'll just have to deal with it :P
