So here I am sitting at a dispatcher screen at Bicycle Network HQ. The other 2 channels have 2 vols because they can't listen and type at the same time. I am solo :D I've had the first 2 crashes and a few broken bikes. I also give the go-ahead for each section to start. This is piss easy. Everyone is freaking out. I'm like yeah it's allllll gooood. It's honestly like I'm in the eye of the storm :P Woke up at 3 to be here by 4.30am. I feel so weird!
If I don't totally crash after going and caring for the pony I have a most brilliant yesterday to share :)

Dave offered me Lonnie today. 12 year old grey purebred Arab gelding.
I rode him, he's INCREDIBLE! We clicked right away, he took SUCH great care of me, you could feel him being so so so careful with me, I haven't felt that for years (although Destiny NEVER does anything naughty or dangerous or feels like she doesn't want me on board, it's not that, it's hard to explain, it's like...he was looking out for me).
Lonnie is worth aprox $8k due to his endurance achievements.
Dave has offered him to me at $1500.
And I said no.

For my animal behaviour course I need to keep a blog :P

Psychotherapy turns to horses to help people open up

The Age SATNEWS Healing with Horses. Equine psychotherapist, Meggin Kirby, with Raj and Star, two of the horses she uses in therapy sessions.

A growing number of therapists in Australia are swapping consultation rooms for corrals (MAGGIE IN: YARDS! WE CALL THEM FUCKING YARDS, NOT CORRALS!!!!!!) and using horses to heal people with mental health conditions.
Equine psychotherapists are qualified mental health practitioners trained to facilitate sessions with clients and horses.Equine therapy is based on the premise that horses help people express themselves more openly and honestly. Therapists also guide clients to interact in different ways with horses to help them discover more positive ways to relate to people.
''Horses offer authentic responses, especially for people hurt in human relationships,'' said Meggin Kirby, psychotherapist and founder of Equine Psychotherapy Australia (EPA). ''I can work without horses, but it can take a lot longer.''

Horses are herd animals so they are inherently social. They are also prey animals that react quickly to perceived threats, to changes in their environment, and even to changes in people's attitudes. This means horses give immediate feedback when clients approach them in different ways.
Equine psychotherapy practitioners need to own healthy horses that are used to ''being listened to'', Ms Kirby said. Trail-ride horses and work horses that are not used ''to two-way communication can shut down and may not respond authentically''.
The treatment begins with clients communicating with horses in an enclosure on the ground, but follow-up sessions may advance to horseback.
''Sian'', 47, came to equine psychotherapy after trying several other types of treatment to deal with the aftermath of drug and alcohol addiction. Sian said her first psychotherapy session with a horse revealed the grief she had been ignoring since adolescence.
''Somehow the presence of the horse taps you into [issues],'' Sian said. ''The power of the horses is that they show you how to connect with your feelings because you notice you have a truer relationship with them when you do.''
Sian said the therapy helped her open up because the horses ''didn't try to interpret my experience or tell me what to do. They allowed me to express my grief without telling a story.''
The wordless, physical nature of communicating with a horse also enables clients to hear the voices in their own heads more clearly.
''We are so verbal, but 90 plus per cent of our communications are non-verbal. People look to words for truth and get totally sidetracked and derailed,'' Ms Kirby said.
There are several equine-assisted therapy models around the world and the practice has been growing since the 1990s. The Australian model, which Ms Kirby developed, focuses on clients' emotional, physical and cognitive experience during sessions.
There are eight qualified equine psychotherapists in Australia, and another 20 will complete the 15-day training course and be certified this year. EPA practitioners treat adults and children with depression, trauma and abuse issues, and a range of mental and physical disabilities. They also conduct personal development and corporate team-building sessions.
The first national Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Learning Conference - in Creswick next weekend - will bring together psychotherapists, psychologists and counsellors from Australia and New Zealand.

Called the farrier for Desi. She asked if she was doing Danny too. For the first time ever I am getting a farrier out...without Danny.

I won this on eBay today. I've been searching for a lasting way to honour Danny's memory and, I don't know, keep him with me somehow in some way. Cruised eBay and this one came up. Perfect.

Apart from the fact Mia is being an idiot and not eating because we refuse to hand feed her, the Cavs are doing fine. Ami has suddenly become really confident and outgoing. Given another month or two he'd be half his weight and actually be a normal dog. Mia...she'd take longer. But we will break her. Anyway, I promised Cav pics, so here's a few happy snaps from about 30 mins ago in the back yard.

Seeing my niece on Sunday, should be good. I think they are planning on naming the boy Nathan. They aren't sure, have a bit of time left yet.

Yesterday I received a call that no horse owner wants to receive. My agistment owner, Dave, had checked the horses in the morning and all was well, Danny was grazing away happily (it was his favourite thing in the world to do). He went back at about 3:30pm-ish to check the horses again, and found Danny down. He ran in but it was too late. It looks like Dan passed away sometime during the morning. No signs of struggle at all. He had a scrape on his hip and one side of his head. We believe what happened is he had a massive heart attack or something along those lines. It looks like he fell, got up and then fell immediately onto his other side. As there was no marks of struggle of any kind, we believe he may have been dead before he hit the ground the 2nd time. The only mark was a small shallow scrape in the ground by a hind hoof, which judging by the look of it was probably from when his nervous system was shutting down.

Poor Destiny was in the paddock with him when it happened and until I got there. She wasn't freaking out or anything but you could see she was distressed. She nickered in a constant stream as soon as she saw Craig and I coming. Craig comforted her and got the halter on while I went to say good bye to Dan. He looked very peaceful, just like he was sleeping. I said good bye, told him he was the best horse anyone could have ever asked for, settled his mane (which never laid down properly, btw) one last time, ran my hand down his sweet face one last time. We led Destiny out, she kept shoving her face into my hands, obviously not too happy. She is in the huge double-private I had them both in before the move to the smaller paddocks. She seemed to calm right down as soon as we were at the other end of the property and settled down to eat almost immediately. She should be fine. I would like to move her in with other horses ASAP but can't in the normal group paddocks (that's where her neck broke out). Dave had a bobcat and will be burying Danny this morning.

I got Danny from my parents as my 16th birthday present. He's been with me through everything. I can't quite believe he's gone, he's always been there. He's been there for almost half my life.

Danny )

I loved that horse so much. I still do. He's free now. Unlimited green grass, unlimited apples.

1. Would involve animals in some way, in a GOOD way, for instance being a butcher; not a good thing!
2. Would involve photography
3. Would involve writing
4. Would involve being around like-minded people
5. Would not involve the transport industry in any way shape or form
6. Would not involve children in any way that required any interaction from me
7. Would allow me to live well. I don't need to be rich, just good
8. Would allow me to travel places
9. Would recognise me in some way as being not being a scum sucker bottom dweller
10. Would not involve night shifts unless it was observing something awesome like the rare Amazonian Night Walking Zombie Fish in it's once a year mating ritual which takes place in the highest Bwahbwah Naha tree on the first full moon of April and only when the Shadow Squirrels can give them a lift up there.

So, I believe I need to be either:
a. A Nat Geo hound
b. A writer
c. A photographer
d. insanely rich
e. in a mental house

:)

Look up Bruce Haynes.
He works at our Sunshine branch.
We speak a couple times a day. Never met him but we get along famously. He sounds VERY okker and he's hilarious. He called me yesterday and sung Happy Birthday to me. LOUDLY!
And he is 10th Dan Karate Do. 10th freaking DAN! 10th!!!! That makes him a Hanshi.
If you know anything about martial arts that should have you on your knees. If you don't, get on your KNEES :D
Wow. Just look him up and see what he can do. What a legend :)

Right, well! Harnessphoto certainly got the ball rolling with the whole friendswap thing, hey!!!! Ok I guess I should do a little intro. Those of you who have put up with me this long feel free to skip :D

Ok, so I'm Maggie. I'm 35 years old, so an old crone really. I am totally childfree but hey if you want them/have them, awesome, just don't expect me to comment much on those posts :) Please don't be offended, it's just not my thing. Let's seeeeee....Well, I'm animal crazy. I love anything nature, but not in a bead wearing hippy dress swirling sort of way. I'm more your get in the filthy boggy creek with a net and see what I can find kind of girl :) Oh and then I usually try to raise whatever I catch :D I have in the past owned pretty much every sort of domestic animal you can own, and some you can't legally own ;) I think really only pigs, sheep and cattle are left. I am not fond of pigs. I have worked with all 3 animals tho :) Currently I own:

2 dogs, Nigel who is a goldie x lab. He is an older boy now and belonged to Craig first. More on Craig later! and Harriet, a pure golden lab who is a rescue and has some...issues. She is OUR dog. I did until a week and 2 days ago (not that I am counting) own a wonderful ex-racing greyhound named Pokie. He was laid to rest after a short battle with cancer last Monday evening. I miss him horrifically.

3 cats, Lily and Murray are ginger and white siblings who I got from the pound, and Floyd, a Cornish Rex who was Craig's cat first. I am very fond of Floyd despite his seriously weird personality :D

7 fish. 3 guppies, 2 platys, 2 platinum gouriamies. In a little fish tank. This is very new. Although I have owned fish for many, many, many years in the past, I haven't had any for about 2 years. Last tank was a 6ft MONSTER!!!! So I needed a break ;)

2 horses! Danny, an aged (we think somewhere between 28-30 yrs old) buckskin gelding. I got him for my 16th birthday and have never looked back. He is retired now and living the life of riley. And Destiny, my Arabian mare who I rescued as a 8 month old foal on her way to the knackery. She is now 17 years old and my soul-horse. Her story can be found under the tag "Destiny's Story". It's pretty interesting from what the others have told me :)

I am married to my best friend in the entire world, Craig. We met when we both worked at 000, which is the Australian (I'm Polish-Australian btw) 911. We've been friends for a long, long time. Then our respective relationships broke up within 3 weeks of each other, he needed a place to stay and well...we were married earlier this year and traveled Europe for our honeymoon :)

I currently work as an admin assistant for a transport company here in Melbourne. It's an alright job but it's not what I want to do. I used to be a very good dispatcher but after two years of really horrific employers I can't face the idea of being on a radio again, I have totally lost my nerve. I have no idea what I want to do with my life professionally. Maybe OH&S? I don't know. I have a degree in Psychology which I don't intend to ever use again. I also hold a degree in Human Resources, which I won't return to again until hell freezes over. :) The only job I have ever truly loved was working at a boarding kennels. It was DAMN hard work but I loved it so much. It didn't pay the bills however, and in the end that comes before following a passion, no matter what all the bullshit FOLLOW THE STARS types say.

I loooooooooooove photography and will at times spam the living daylights out of my Flist (under a cut, I swear!). I shoot anything, but animals and nature are my fav subjects because let's face it, nothing is cooler! I own a 7D.

I adore reading and have an obsession with my Kindle ;) My fav authors are Jodi Picoult, Robin Hobb and a few fantasy types. I am NOT into fan-fic sorry, but if it makes you happy, write like there is no tomorrow and god-speed to your pen. I am currently heavily obsessed with the Dresden books. I also have a great love for comics. I don't like the violent crap, I like the GOOD stuff. Ones that are beautifully drawn, have a great story line and actual OMG character development. Comics are an unsung and untapped art form that can be used to create great beauty through their simplicity. I also LOVE MLP!!!!! Rainbow Dash for the win!!!!!!!!!!

And I geocache :) I also tend to resort to swearing when I get seriously peeved about something. I'm an ex volunteer fire fighter. I have a completely screwed up left leg which annoys the crap out of me. Ummm....

Anything else? I don't know, feel free to ask away!

George Zimmerman, the idiot who shot and killed a boy, an unarmed boy who's only crime was to be wearing a hoody and being black in a gated neighbourhood (not to mention the unspeakable crime of carrying skittles) has been not guilty. Cleared of all charges.
